A habit tracker without streaks
The streak is the most celebrated mechanic in habit apps, and the most common reason people quit them. One missed day zeroes the counter, the zero reads as failure, and the app gets deleted along with the habit. A tracker built to keep habits alive needs a different vocabulary.
The all-or-nothing problem
A streak is binary: you did it or you didn't. Real life isn't. You stretched for five minutes instead of twenty. You wrote half a page, or you deliberately rested. A binary tracker records all three of those as the same thing: nothing. The record starts lying about your life, and once the record lies, keeping it stops feeling worth it.
Honest marks: done, partial, skipped
Calibrate marks each habit day with a hand-drawn scribble in one of three honest states:
- Done is a filled circle. The full thing happened.
- Partial is a half-filled circle. Some of it happened, and some counts. Ten minutes of a thirty-minute walk is not zero.
- Skipped is a gray mark. A deliberate rest day, recorded as the choice it was.
Unmarked days simply stay hollow and read as quiet. Nothing resets. There is no counter to protect, so there's nothing a bad week can destroy.
Backfill: yesterday still counts
Streak apps punish you twice for a busy day: once for missing, once for forgetting to log. In Calibrate, tap any habit's name to open its monthly view, tap the quiet day, and mark it late. You did the thing. The record should say so, whenever you get to it.
The monthly board: texture, not a chain
Calibrate's Calendar has a monthly habit board: one column per habit, one scribbled mark per day. Read a month of it and you see what a real practice looks like. Dense weeks, thin weeks, a deliberate rest, a partial comeback. That texture is more motivating than any chain, because it looks like a life.
And habits are entirely opt-in. Calibrate is a focus and intentions app first. Add habits if gentle accounting helps you; skip them and Today stays clean.
One boundary worth knowing: habits are for practices with a rhythm. For things you do occasionally (changing the water filter, flipping the mattress), a habit column just fills with missed days. Those belong in Keeping track, a last-done log instead.
