Guide · Choosing a focus app
The best Pomodoro apps for iPhone, by use case
"Best" is doing a lot of dishonest work in most of these lists. A timer that's best for someone who can't stop is wrong for someone who can't start; the best game is the worst choice for someone burned out on games. So instead of a ranking, this list matches ten good apps to the reason your last one failed. One is ours, disclosed below; several are not, recommended anyway.
Honesty note: this page is published by Calibrate, which appears below under the use case it was actually built for. Every app is described by the same criteria. Market numbers come from our September 2026 census of 75 top focus apps; details checked September 2026, verify prices before deciding.
Start with why the last one failed
Some context from the census before the list: 99% of top focus apps are free to download, 37% motivate through game mechanics, 20% talk about streaks, and just 9% offer a one-time price. The market mostly sells pressure on subscription. If pressure works on you, great; two of the apps below do it well. If pressure is why you're here reading a "best of" list again, the other eight are the interesting ones.
Best when starting is the hard part
Calibrate · iPhone, with check-ins on Apple Watch · free to start, subscription or one-time lifetime
Ours. A to-do list with the timer inside: swipe a to-do and the first block is three minutes, because a 25-minute opening commitment is exactly what task paralysis refuses. Blocks after that end in a question on your Lock Screen (another block, a break, or stop), never a bell, and each block gets an honest answer: on it, in and out, or away. No streaks, no scores, nothing to break.
Main tradeoff: iPhone only, and no app blocking by design.
Best classic timer
Focus Keeper · iPhone · free tier
The straightforward pomodoro: a clean dial, 25/5 cycles, satisfying sounds, simple session history. If the original technique already works for you, this is it with no additives.
Main tradeoff: fixed intervals inherit every reason classic Pomodoro fails some brains: the bell doesn't ask, it tells.
Best if games genuinely motivate you
Forest · iPhone + Android · paid app
The famous one: plant a tree, stay off your phone, or it dies. The stakes are the product, and for people the game suits, it truly works. Real-tree planting partnership included.
Main tradeoff: when the game stops working, it becomes nagging; that moment is common enough that we wrote a whole Forest alternatives guide for it.
Best free game, with friends
Flora · iPhone + Android · core free
Forest's spirit, free at the core, with shared gardens and optional real-money stakes with friends. The social layer is the differentiator.
Main tradeoff: still a game, with everything that eventually implies.
Best for Mac + iPhone, with reflection and stats
Session · Mac + iOS · subscription
The most mature mindful pomodoro on Apple platforms: intention before each session, reflection after, app blocking on Mac, deep analytics over time. Serious, calm, well made.
Main tradeoff: subscription only, and the analytics can become a quiet scoreboard if numbers stress you.
Best minimal timer across Apple devices
Flow · Mac + iOS + iPad · free tier
Beautifully plain: intervals, iCloud sync, light website blocking on Mac, deliberately little else. Calm by omission.
Main tradeoff: no task connection and classic fixed intervals.
Best all-in-one task manager + timer
Focus To-Do · iPhone + Android + desktop · free tier
Pomodoro fused with a full task manager: projects, subtasks, estimates, reports, on everything you own. The maximalist option.
Main tradeoff: the most feature-dense pick here; power if you want a full system, noise if you came for calm.
Best fully free, zero commitment
Pomofocus · any browser · free
A clean pomodoro in a browser tab with task labels. No install, no account. The cheapest possible way to learn whether blocks help you at all.
Main tradeoff: lives in a tab, so it can't reach your iPhone's Lock Screen at all.
Best one-time price
Be Focused · Mac + iOS · free tier, one-time upgrade
The dependable veteran: straightforward pomodoro with simple task tracking and a small one-time upgrade instead of a subscription. In a market where only 9% of apps offer pay-once, that's rarer than it should be.
Main tradeoff: utilitarian, rigid intervals, and it won't help you start or reflect.
Best soundscapes instead of structure
Tide · iPhone + Android · free tier
A focus timer wrapped in rain, waves, and cafe noise, plus breathing and sleep modes. The gentlest thing on this list; more atmosphere than system.
Main tradeoff: light structure; nothing calls you back when you drift.
If you're still torn
Two shortcuts. If your history with focus apps is a series of abandoned games and broken streaks, read the calm subset compared; that's the school built for you. And if the honest answer is "I never even start," no timer choice fixes that by itself; start with the three-minute method, then pick the app that carries it.
