Calm Pomodoro apps: six gentle timers, compared

Most focus timers ship with pressure built in: trees that die, streaks that break, red numbers when you fall behind. For some people that pressure genuinely helps. If it has never lasted for you, this list is the other school: timers that give work a shape without keeping score of you. (The pressure school is most of the market: in our 2026 census of 75 top focus apps, 37% sell gamification and 20% talk about streaks.) Six apps, same criteria for each, tradeoffs stated.

Honesty note: this page is published by Calibrate, which appears below. Every app is judged by the same criteria, and the tradeoffs on our own entry are real ones. Details checked September 2026; verify prices before deciding.

What makes a timer "calm"

The six

Calibrate · iPhone, with check-ins on Apple Watch · free to start, subscription or one-time lifetime

Ours, disclosed above. A to-do list with the timer inside: swipe a to-do, start with a three-minute block, and blocks after that end with a question on your Lock Screen (another block, a break, or stop) instead of a bell. It asks how each block went (on it, in and out, or away) and mirrors the week back without grading it. Built specifically for people who couldn't start, not just people who can't stay.

Good fit if: starting is your hard part, you want the to-do and the timer to be the same object, and you never want to be scored.
Main tradeoff: iPhone only, and no app blocking; the calm is the product, so people who want punishment-as-motivation will find it too gentle.

Session · Mac + iOS · subscription

The most mature mindful Pomodoro on Apple platforms: set an intention before each session, reflect after it, block distracting apps on Mac, review analytics over time. Calm in tone throughout, and serious about the reflection part.

Good fit if: you live at a Mac, love intention-setting, and want deep stats about your focus.
Main tradeoff: subscription-only, Mac-centric strengths, and the analytics dashboard can quietly become a scoreboard if numbers are what stress you.

Tide · iOS + Android · free tier

A focus timer wrapped in soundscapes: rain, waves, forest, cafe. Includes breathing exercises and sleep sounds, so it stretches beyond work into general nervous-system care. The calmest aesthetic on this list.

Good fit if: ambience settles you and you want one app for focus, breathing, and sleep.
Main tradeoff: light structure: no task list, no check-ins, nothing that helps you notice where a session actually went.

Flow · Mac + iOS + iPad · free tier

A beautifully plain Pomodoro timer for the Apple ecosystem: intervals, sync, light website blocking on Mac, and deliberately little else. Calm by omission.

Good fit if: you want the most minimal credible timer across your Apple devices.
Main tradeoff: classic fixed intervals, so the bell still cuts flow; and no connection to what you're working on.

Be Focused · Mac + iOS · free tier, one-time upgrade

The dependable veteran: a straightforward Pomodoro timer with simple task tracking, no subscription required, no games ever. No frills, and steady.

Good fit if: you want a proven, inexpensive, no-nonsense timer.
Main tradeoff: utilitarian design and rigid intervals; it structures work but won't help you start or reflect.

Pomofocus · any browser · free

A clean web-based Pomodoro timer with task labels. No install, no account, no pressure, genuinely free. The lowest-commitment way to try block-based work at all.

Good fit if: you work at a computer and want to test whether blocks help before buying anything.
Main tradeoff: it can't reach your phone's Lock Screen, and a timer in a tab is only as present as the tab.

How to choose

Ask which part of focusing is actually hard for you. If it's starting, you want a tiny entry and no failure states: Calibrate. If it's staying settled, sound may matter more than structure: Tide. If it's understanding your patterns and you like data: Session. If the hard part is committing to anything, start free in a tab with Pomofocus and graduate when the blocks prove themselves. And if 25 unbroken minutes has never once worked for you, the problem may be the classic method itself; that story is in why Pomodoro fails ADHD brains.
