Forest alternatives, for people who don't want a game

Forest is a lovely idea: plant a tree, stay off your phone, or the tree dies. For a while, the game works. Then, for a lot of people, it stops: the dead trees turn from motivation into nagging, the novelty wears off, and you notice the timer never actually knew what you were working on. If that's where you are, the right alternative depends on why you're leaving. Start there.

Honesty note: this page is published by Calibrate, and Calibrate appears in the list below. Every app here is described by the same criteria, tradeoffs included, and some reasons for leaving Forest point to apps that aren't ours. Details checked September 2026; prices and features change, verify before you commit.

Start with your reason for leaving

The alternatives, honestly

Calibrate · iPhone, with check-ins on Apple Watch · free to start, subscription or one-time lifetime

A to-do list with a calm focus timer inside, ours, disclosed above. Swipe any to-do to start; the first block is three minutes, blocks after that end in a question (another block, a break, or stop) instead of a bell. The session lives on your Lock Screen and Apple Watch, and the time lands on the to-do it belonged to. No trees, no streaks, no failure states; a session you end early is a session, not a corpse.

Good fit if: you want the opposite of a game: structure without scoring, and your to-dos and timer in one place.
Main tradeoff: iPhone only, no Android or desktop, and it deliberately has no app blocking; if hard blocking is what keeps you honest, pair it with Screen Time or look at a blocker.

Flora · iOS + Android · core free

The closest thing to Forest itself: plant trees with friends, optionally put real money on the line, and grow a shared garden. If what bothered you about Forest was the price or wanting friends in the loop rather than the game itself, Flora is the honest answer.

Good fit if: the game still motivates you and social stakes help.
Main tradeoff: it is still very much a game, with everything that eventually implied about Forest.

Session · Mac + iOS · subscription

A mindful Pomodoro timer: set an intention before each session, reflect after, block distracting apps on Mac, and review analytics about your focus. Thoughtfully made and the most serious "grown-up" alternative on this list.

Good fit if: you work at a Mac and want intention-setting, reflection, and detailed stats.
Main tradeoff: subscription pricing, Mac-centric strengths, and the analytics can become their own quiet scoreboard if numbers stress you.

Tide · iOS + Android · free tier

A focus timer wrapped in soundscapes: rain, waves, cafe noise, white noise, plus breathing and sleep modes. The anti-Forest in spirit: instead of a game demanding attention, an atmosphere that asks nothing.

Good fit if: sound is what settles you, and you want zero mechanics of any kind.
Main tradeoff: light on structure: no task connection, and nothing invites you back when you drift.

Flow · Mac + iOS + iPad · free tier

A minimal Pomodoro timer for Apple platforms: clean intervals, syncs across devices, light website blocking on Mac. No game, no personality, no opinion; a good tool that stays out of the way.

Good fit if: you want the plainest possible timer across Mac and iPhone.
Main tradeoff: classic rigid intervals, so the reasons standard Pomodoro fails some people (see the ADHD version of that story) apply in full.

Focus To-Do · iOS + Android + desktop · free tier

A Pomodoro timer fused with a full task manager: projects, subtasks, estimates, reports, everywhere. The maximalist answer to "why doesn't my timer know my tasks?"

Good fit if: you want one heavyweight system for everything and enjoy configuring it.
Main tradeoff: it is the most feature-dense option here, which is power if you want a full system and noise if you came looking for calm.

Pomofocus · any browser · free

A clean Pomodoro timer in a browser tab with simple task labels. No account needed, nothing to install, genuinely free.

Good fit if: you work at a computer and want zero commitment.
Main tradeoff: it lives in a tab, so it can't reach your phone's Lock Screen, and closing the tab ends the relationship.

The question under the question

Forest worked by making your focus about something else: the tree. Every alternative above makes a different bet about what should replace the tree: silence, sound, stats, friends, or structure. Our bet, stated plainly since it's ours: nothing should replace the tree. The work itself, started small enough to actually begin and mirrored back honestly at the end of the week, is enough. That's the philosophy Calibrate is built on, and it's also why it won't suit people for whom the game genuinely helps; those people should keep the game.
